The Local Government Association (LGA) is a political organisation because it is elected representatives from all different political parties that direct the organisation through boards and panels. However, LGA always strive to agree a common cross-party position on issues and to speak with one voice on behalf of local government. This means that actual fixed headcount is only around 350 all based in Westminster. Recruitment levels are typically low, but every September they open a very sought after graduate scheme which garners many thousands of applications. Jobtrain provides a dedicated secondary candidate portal specifically for this campaign.

The challenge

The LGA is a membership organisation with a  total 327 councils in England are members of the LGA. 22 Welsh unitary councils are in membership via the Welsh Local Government Association. Recruitment is divided across LGA recruitment and the National Graduate Development Programme.

HR is an in-house service providing all administration and recruitment for all the organisations above; there is no separate recruitment team.

The LGA has three vacancy areas, which are all maintained by one back-office administration system – an internal portal for their own employees to access internal only vacancies, an external portal for all publicly advertised vacancies and candidates to apply via and an area for their National Graduate Development Programme (NGDP).

When did the Local Government Association  start recruiting with Jobtrain?

In 2012 following a successful tender process, The Local Government Association chose Jobtrain as their preferred provider of applicant tracking software and we completed a successful re-tender in June 2016.

Our recruitment software was initially implemented to replace a largely manual process, to deliver a more professional experience for all applicants and a far more efficient and user-friendly solution for all stakeholders.
