Free job board listings – “The Times They Are A-Changin'”

GILES HECKSTALL-SMITH • 07 Sept 2026

Job boards like Indeed built their business on a simple trade. Post for free, get some reach, pay to get more.

That model is under real financial pressure. Venture capital funding into ‘marketplace job boards’ has fallen sharply since its 2021 peak and several of the biggest names in the sector are repositioning around the same idea: paid, outcome-accountable results rather than open (and often free) ‘duration based’ adverts.

LinkedIn has been moving this way for some time, rolling job posting into a wider ecosystem of learning, recruiter tools and AI-assisted hiring features rather than treating a job ad as a standalone product. ZipRecruiter has been building community and content products alongside its core listings. Stepstone Group, (under private equity ownership), has talked openly about repositioning its portfolio of brands towards AI-driven matching rather than pure listing volume.

The direction of travel is the same everywhere: employer budget is migrating towards platforms that can prove an outcome (like clicks and applies), and organic reach is becoming the thing you earn access to rather than the thing you're owed.

The gravy train of free advertising may be approaching the end of the line.

Where Jobtrain sits in this

This is the part we want to be completely straight with you about, because it's a question that comes up regularly and the honest answer isn't always the one people expect.

Jobtrain makes your vacancies and adverts ‘available’ for advertising via a feed to a network of job boards. That part is our job and we do it to the best of our ability, but we cannot control or guarantee that your vacancies will be advertised as that is solely down to the job board’s own policy

What happens once a job lands on an external board is not something Jobtrain, or any ATS for that matter, can control. Whether a listing appears near the top of a search, how long it stays visible and whether it's shown at all in a search, is decided by that board's own algorithm, its own ranking rules and its own sponsorship model. We don't own Indeed's search relevance engine any more than we own LinkedIn's feed algorithm. No applicant tracking system does.

This is why we offer job boosting and paid advertising via our partner integrations and platforms (including Indeed for public sector, education and third sector clients).

That distinction matters more now than it used to. A year ago, a job that was correctly fed out would generally appear. Today, correctly fed is the entry requirement, not the guarantee. If a client's job seems to have low visibility on an external board, the most likely explanation isn't a broken feed. It's that board's own ranking and sponsorship decisions doing exactly what they were built to do.

What this means practically

A couple of things are worth knowing if you're planning your advertising budget spend for the months or year ahead.

Firstly, for roles where you need guaranteed visibility, particularly hard-to-fill or time-critical vacancies, sponsorship on the relevant board is increasingly the only reliable route to prominent placement. Free listings still have a place, but treat them as a supplement, not the whole strategy or any kind of guarantee of applications.

Secondly, Jobtrain offers solutions for both paid advertising (including boosting individual jobs) and vacancy posting for job boards that you may have existing paid contracts with.

Business Case - 1The one thing worth remembering

If your vacancies and adverts aren't showing up on job boards the way they used to, the honest answer is rarely about the feed from Jobtrain (or your ATS). It's about a job board industry that is, across the board, quietly moving from free-and-open to paid-and-managed. Jobtrain's role is to make your vacancies available to job boards via certain feeds (where supported and available), whether they are published for free is in their hands and down to their own policies and decisions.
